Where did "spam" get its name?

"General consensus is that the term originates from a Monty Python skit.

"A couple are attempting to order breakfast at a restaurant where all the menu items feature spam. The woman doesn't like spam, and asks the waitress if they offer any spam free dishes. Alas - there is no escape from spam.
